‘Heat pumps’ are the engine for ductless heating and cooling systems; sometimes they are known as air source or ‘split’ systems. They are a relatively new technology providing cost-effective and energy-efficient heating and cooling for homes and businesses. Energy saving over traditional electric heat is typically as much as 60%. AND if you need to add heat/cool to a room you can do it WITHOUT expensive duct work.
How Ductless Heat Pumps Heat Your Home
A traditional system burns fuel to create heat, while a heat pump moves heat into or out of a building. Heat pumps circulate refrigerant, between an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor radiator. When heating a building, the heat pump heats the liquid by pressurizing it, pumps it from outdoors inside, and then circulates it through the home.
After the liquid transfers the heat into the building, it is depressurized and cooled. The liquid then travels to the outdoor radiator, where the ambient temperature warms the refrigerant, and the process begins again.
According to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center using these systems vs traditional baseboards can save 60% on electric heat costs.
Ductless split systems as shown in the diagram include:
- Small outdoor air conditioner or heat pump unit
- A compact indoor wall unit
- Refrigerant tubing and wire connections―pass through a small hole from indoor to outdoor unit to connect the system.
- On unit or remote control―your interface for controlling your system
Ductless Heating Provides Lifestyle Benefits
Experience ultimate comfort in the rooms you use most
As your family needs change you may enlarge a family room, convert a porch to a sunroom, or build an addition over the garage. As you do so your heating and cooling system changes too.
Ductless systems make those changes hassle-free.
- Experience ultimate comfort in the rooms you use most.
- Save energy with sophisticated but simple zone control. Each room can have a different temperature level.
- Whisper quiet operation

Individualized zone comfort control for your home
Are there two or three rooms in your home where you spend most of your time? Now you can save energy by controlling each room separately to keep the spaces you use the most at your ideal temperature.
Maybe you want to convert unheated space over your garage into a usable space. Or maybe it’s finally time to finish the basement — ductless heating and cooling systems can make these new spaces warm when you want and cool when you want.
